How to Crochet Crocodile Stitch | The Scales



This is the ​second of two tutorials to create the stunning crocodile stitch in crochet. ​This is where the beauty of the stitch becomes apparent. Once he first set of scales have been created the rest becomes much easier to work on with the scales overlapping to build up a beautiful finish.


It's also a great stitch to create feathers and leaves as in used in my recent Winter Fir Teacosy pattern (which is free).

WHAT ​I USED


Abbreviations

UK Terms ​ch chain chsp chain space slst slip stitch dc double crochet tr treble crochet ​sk ​ skip st(s) stitch(es) rep repeat

US ​Terms ​ch chain chsp chain space slst slip stitch ​sc ​ single crochet ​dc ​double crochet ​sk ​ skip st(s) stitch(es) rep repeat


Remember we are now building on the v stitches already created. You will be alternating a row of V stitch with a row of scales attached to the front, before building up with another row of V stitches. Continue on in this way until the required number of scales has been reached.


​UK Terms - ​Scales


​Ro​w 1: ​​​Ch 3 (for the first tr), work 4 tr around the first leg of the V stitch, ch 1, tr 5 around the second leg of the V, *dc into the next ch sp, 5 tr around first leg of V, ch 1, 5 tr around second leg of V; rep from * to end of row.


Row 2 and all even rows:​ ​​Create a row of V stitches.


Row 3: Slst to top of second V st, ch 3 (for the first tr), work 4 tr around the first leg of the V stitch, ch 1, tr 5 around the second leg of the V, *dc into the next ch sp, 5 tr around first leg of V, ch 1, 5 tr around second leg of V; rep from * to end of row.

​​Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until work is desired height, ending on an odd row.

​Fasten off.


US Terms - ​Scales
